Description:
This webinar will review the mechanisms and measures of spasticity as a component of the upper motor neuron syndrome after Spinal Cord Injury. The latest medical and surgical treatments for spasticity will be discussed with an emphasis on the use of botulinum neurotoxins and intrathecal medications. Appropriate patient selection, goal setting and the importance of physical and occupational therapy to enhance these treatments will be highlighted.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
• Describe the indications, risks and benefits of oral and intrathecal medications used to treat generalized spasticity in patients with SCI
• Discuss the appropriate conditions that can be managed with focal treatments for spasticity in patients with SCI, such as botulinum neurotoxin and phenol injections and their potential effectiveness and side effects
