OVERVIEW

UC Davis Pain Management Series for Physical Therapists is organized by UC Davis Health System - Continuing Medical Education and would be held during Jul 17, 2015 - Sep 30, 2017. This online activity is designed for interdisciplinary team members including: physical therapists, occupational therapists and assistants. This series in pain management and end-of-life was created without any pharmaceutical support. It features UC Davis pain specialists who are faculty physicians in the field of pain and palliative medicine.

Educational Objectives:
At the end of the course, participants should be able to:
• Have an awareness of other treatment modalities besides medication
• Recognize the problem of prescription drug abuse
• Review excessive use of opioids and chronic pain
• Discuss the expectations of responsible prescribing from regulators, including medical boards and shift your practice to one firmly based on risk and benefits as well as an emphasis on risk management
• Describe the neurophysiology of pain transmission
• Evaluate the patient in pain
• Differentiate between different procedural interventions and understand when each is indicated
• Discuss the imaging anatomy and terms frequently used in radiology reports
• Describe the strengths and weaknesses of each imaging modality for evaluating degenerative diseases of the spine
• Describe pharmacological techniques of pain treatment
• Identify and treat addictive behaviors
• Clarify the legal issues surrounding pain management
• Utilize options to assess and treat the child in pain
• Determine how to treat pain and suffering in the patient with terminal illness.
