Course Description:
This course will focus on physical therapy in relation to atypical development of the pediatric cardiovascular system. Understanding the typical development of the pediatric heart is essential prior to taking this course. Content will begin with interpretation of diagnostic testing followed by an in-depth look at the most commonly seen cardiovascular conditions. Surgical and medical interventions for each condition will be examined. Equipment and medication will be explored to the extent that it impacts physical therapy practice. The course will end with how to select appropriate interventions for specific age ranges and conditions. Material in this course is targeted toward PTs and OTs in the acute care, outpatient, and early intervention settings.
Learning Objectives:
• Interpret cardiovascular diagnostic testing results to determine appropriate plan of care
• Differentiate the most commonly seen cardiovascular conditions in the pediatric population
• Distinguish how various equipment can impact a physical therapy plan of care
• Analyze how commonly seen cardiovascular medication can alter a physical therapy plan of care
• Create interventions for pediatric patients/clients with a cardiovascular condition
