The Ethical, Legal, and Regulatory Foundations of Pharmacy Compounding is a self-guided continuing education program that is available to all pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Learn the fundamentals of establishing and maintaining an effective ethical compounding pharmacy and building a culture of quality within your pharmacy practice.

This course includes information about the comprehensive approach to ethics and quality and how it is related to compounding, including evolution, legal requirements, clinical obligation and is essential in building a quality culture mindset throughout the organization. Compounding laws and regulations, record keeping requirements in compounding, error prevention and remediation, formula development, and personnel hiring and training will be explored in detail.

Additional knowledge-based activities include identifying the elements of a quality assurance program in compounding, describing opportunities for collaboration with healthcare colleagues, discussing professional judgement ethics, developing and communicating compounding credibility, describing ways to become an ambassador for pharmacy compounding, and explaining diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) in compounding as we serve diverse patient populations.

Objectives

1. Summarize the clinical rationale aligned with the role of compounding in providing inclusive patient care.
2. Define the legal requirements and regulations specific to a compounding pharmacy and dispensing compounded preparations.
3. Describe record keeping required in compounding, including standard operating procedures, master formulations, compounding logs, sourcing ingredients, and error prevention and remediation
4. Outline training and evaluation plans for compounding personnel
5. Describe methods for assuring the quality of compounded products and compounding practices
6. Identify strategies to enhance collaboration with healthcare colleagues
7. Explain how to incorporate diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) in compounding practices, including situations of conscientious objection, patient care, and hiring practices
8. Describe ways to advocate for pharmacy compounding with our strategic alliances with our policymakers.
