OVERVIEW

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by multisystem involvement and a diverse array of clinical and laboratory manifestations, often making it difficult to diagnose. The condition can affect nearly every organ system, including the skin, joints, kidneys, lungs, and central nervous system, leading to significant morbidity if not properly managed. This continuing education (CE) course provides a comprehensive review of SLE for healthcare professionals, including its complex etiopathogenesis involving genetic predisposition, environmental triggers, and immune system dysregulation. Learners will explore the epidemiological trends of SLE, the latest classification criteria, and the nuances in diagnostic testing, such as ANA, anti-dsDNA, and complement levels. Emphasis will be placed on applying evidence-based treatment strategies supported by the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) guidelines and recent clinical trial data. Participants will gain the knowledge required to distinguish SLE from similar conditions, implement appropriate laboratory evaluations, and prescribe treatments tailored to the severity and organ involvement. This course is designed to equip primary care providers, specialists, and support clinicians with the tools to effectively manage SLE effectively, ensuring better patient outcomes through early diagnosis, patient-centered care, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the mechanisms involved in the etiopathogenesis of SLE, including genetic, environmental, and immunologic factors.
  • Describe the clinical features and complications associated with SLE and apply the latest classification criteria.
  • Order and interpret appropriate laboratory tests for diagnosing and monitoring SLE.
  • Apply evidence-based treatment plans for SLE based on clinical trials and EULAR guidelines.

Who Should Do This Course

This course is ideal for Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, and Physician Assistants involved in diagnosing or managing autoimmune diseases. Did You Know?

  • An estimated 1.5 million Americans live with lupus, with women comprising about 90% of all diagnosed cases (Lupus Foundation of America).
  • The average time from symptom onset to lupus diagnosis is six years, highlighting the need for better awareness and diagnostic accuracy (Lupus UK, 2023).
  • Black and Hispanic women are two to three times more likely to develop lupus than white women (CDC, 2022).
  • Kidney involvement, or lupus nephritis, occurs in up to 60% of SLE patients and is a major contributor to morbidity (NIH, 2021).
