Description:
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons manage a wide variety of benign and malignant pathologic entities, and one of the most important intra-operative considerations is setting and achieving an appropriate surgical margin. Inadequate surgical margins have a deleterious impact on patient outcomes, especially in cases of malignant neoplasms. This course will provide an evidence-based overview of appropriate surgical margins for benign and malignant neoplasms of the oral cavity and also will discuss the basis for size of these margins. Additionally, this course will provide an overview of how to address "positive" surgical margins and review existing and emerging technologies aimed at optimized surgical margins in head and neck surgery.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

• Examine an evidence-based overview of surgical margins utilized in the extirpation of benign and malignant pathologic entities of the oral cavity. 
• Identify an evidence-based overview in a case-based format in managing cases with a final pathologic result of a close or a positive margin. 
• Explain existing and emerging technologies aimed to optimizing surgical margins.
