Dr. Fullerton will discuss risk factors for childhood arterial ischemic stroke, particularly as they relate to both major infections, like meningitis, and minor infections, like the common cold. She will also discuss childhood cerebral arteriopathies, how they affect risk of recurrent stroke in children, and what is known about the role of infection in the development of these arteriopathies. Results will be presented from the recently completed NIH-funded prospective study, the Vascular effects of Infection in Pediatric Stroke (VIPS) study.
Highlights:
• To understand how infection can act as a trigger for childhood stroke
• To know what specific pathogens have been linked to stroke in children
• To understand the relationship between infection, arteriopathies, and risk of recurrent stroke
