Spinal Cord Injury and the Impact of Aging: A Geriatric Framework is organized by AMDA - The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term care Medicine.

Description:
This session will introduce the audience to the International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury (ISNCSCI). There will be discussions on post-SCI medical complications, with a focus on the effect of aging. Included will be guidelines for medical follow-ups of healthy spinal cord injury survivors. Finally, as more people with SCI survive into their later years, geriatricians will have a prominent role to facilitate the successful aging of these individuals.

Learning Objectives:
• Recognize skeletal vs. neurologic vs. functional level of injury in a spinal cord injured person within the framework of the International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury (ISNCSCI).
• Explain the risks of DVTs and PEs in a spinal cord injured person and the duration of pharmacologic prophylaxis.
• Describe the treatment and prevention for autonomic dysreflexia (AD).
• Recognize spinal cord injury neurogenic bowel and bladder management protocols.
