Description:
Shoulder dystocia is defined as a vaginal delivery that requires a series of additional maneuvers to deliver the infant after routine, gentle traction of the head has failed. Despite the existence of pre-conception, antepartum, and intrapartum risk factors, nearly half of all shoulder dystocias occur in the absence of risk factors, making the occurrence largely unpredictable. The perinatal morbidity and mortality associated with shoulder dystocia can be significant, even when managed appropriately. Although considered an obstetric emergency, shoulder dystocia can usually be managed and resolved uneventfully by a well-prepared, trained obstetric provider and a team of nursing/resuscitation attendants. This continuing education program covers the current evidence regarding prediction, prevention, and management of shoulder dystocia.

Goal and Learning Outcomes:
The goal of this continuing education program is to inform nurses and midwives about the current evidence regarding prediction, prevention, and management of shoulder dystocia, including communicating critical tasks that should be performed when shoulder dystocia is identified.
