Sharper Focus on Geographic Atrophy: Imaging-Based Strategies for Retina Specialists is organized by Medical Learning Institute Inc (MLI).

Release Date: Aug 16, 2026
Expiration Date: Aug 15, 2027

Description:
Sharper Focus on Geographic Atrophy: Imaging-Based Strategies for Retina Specialists is an educational initiative designed to equip retina specialists, comprehensive ophthalmologists, and other members of the multidisciplinary ophthalmology care team with practical, evidence-based strategies for the diagnosis, monitoring, and management of geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Despite advances in retinal imaging and the emergence of complement inhibitor therapies, GA remains underrecognized and inconsistently managed in clinical practice. Variability in the interpretation of multimodal imaging, the lack of standardized monitoring, and gaps in understanding the complement system's role in disease progression continue to challenge coordinated, patient-centered care. Delayed referral, limited patient understanding of the disease course, and barriers to adherence with monitoring schedules can further delay timely intervention and complicate long-term management.

This activity addresses these gaps by reviewing the clinical and multimodal imaging features that distinguish early and intermediate AMD from GA, the lesion-progression patterns that signal worsening disease, and the role of complement dysregulation in GA pathogenesis. Faculty will also examine the mechanisms of action, candidate selection, and integration of complement inhibitor therapies into evidence-based care pathways for patients with GA secondary to AMD.

Through expert-led, case-based discussion, participants will strengthen their ability to interpret imaging findings with greater confidence, implement structured monitoring strategies, and deliver more coordinated, individualized care. Faculty will anchor the discussion in multimodal imaging and use animations of disease pathophysiology and treatment mechanisms, interactive Q&A, and collaborative problem-solving, closing with key takeaways and practical tips for GA monitoring. The program is delivered as a live, interactive industry-supported symposium (ISS) and is intended for retina specialists and other members of the multidisciplinary ophthalmology care team involved in the management of GA secondary to AMD in the United States.

Learning Objectives:
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Assess clinical and multimodal imaging features that differentiate early and intermediate age-related macular degeneration (AMD) from geographic atrophy (GA)
  • Analyze the role of the complement system in GA pathogenesis and the mechanism of action of complement-targeted therapies
  • Select appropriate candidates for complement inhibitor therapy and integrate these agents into evidence-based care pathways for patients with GA secondary to AMD
  • Implement structured, evidence-based monitoring strategies to track GA progression and guide patient care
