OVERVIEW

Self-limited epilepsy syndromes represent a distinct group of epilepsy syndromes that typically have a benign course, age-specific onset, and a favorable prognosis. These syndromes, while often transient, require precise diagnosis and classification to avoid unnecessary interventions and ensure appropriate care. This CME/CE course offers a focused exploration of self-limited epilepsies across the neonatal, infantile, and childhood spectrum.

Participants will begin by understanding the definition and diagnostic significance of epilepsy syndromes—how they differ from isolated seizures and why identifying a specific syndrome is essential for prognosis, treatment planning, and patient counseling. The course presents diagnostic criteria that distinguish epilepsy syndromes from single, unprovoked seizures and discusses the clinical features that define a syndromic diagnosis.

Learners will then examine the classification of self-limited syndromes based on the age of onset:

  • Neonatal: Self-Limited Neonatal Epilepsy (SeLNE), a typically benign condition with autosomal dominant inheritance.
  • Infantile: Including Self-Limited Infantile Epilepsy (SeLIE), Generalized Epilepsy with Febrile Seizures Plus (GEFS+), and Myoclonic Epilepsy in Infancy (MEI).
  • Childhood: Encompassing SeLECTS (Self-Limited Epilepsy with Centrotemporal Spikes), SeLEAS (Self-Limited Epilepsy with Autonomic Seizures), Childhood-Onset Visual Epilepsy (COVE), and Panayiotopoulos-like Epilepsy (POLE).

Each syndrome is presented with characteristic clinical features, EEG findings, seizure semiology, treatment options, and expected outcomes. The course provides an evidence-based framework for making syndrome-specific decisions, reducing diagnostic ambiguity, and supporting parental education.

By the end of this course, healthcare professionals will be equipped with the skills to identify self-limited epilepsy syndromes early, implement appropriate treatment strategies, and reassure families with accurate prognostic information—all of which contribute to optimal pediatric epilepsy care.

  • SeLECTS (formerly Rolandic Epilepsy) is the most common self-limited epilepsy syndrome, accounting for up to 15% of childhood epilepsy. (Neurology, 2020)
  • Self-Limited Neonatal Epilepsy (SeLNE) is often inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern and linked to KCNQ2 mutations. (Epilepsy Currents, 2021)
  • Panayiotopoulos-like Epilepsy can mimic gastrointestinal or migraine syndromes due to its autonomic seizure presentation. (Pediatrics, 2018)
  • Myoclonic Epilepsy in Infancy (MEI) typically resolves by age 2–3 without neurologic impairment. (J Child Neurol, 2017)
