Description:
A primary goal of the NIH/NINDS- funded FL-PR CReSD, one of 4 national Stroke Prevention Intervention Research Programs (SPIRPs), is to evaluate stroke disparities in Florida and Puerto Rico and to develop culturally tailored interventions to close identified gaps in acute stroke care. The production of the FL-PR CReSD Research Education and Training Core online series accomplishes the delivery of education on cultural competencies and disparities for a broad-spectrum audience of stakeholders.

The online training will provide skills and strategies needed to enhance stroke disparities research and decrease stroke disparities in Hispanics and other groups. The training videos are designed to increase awareness of health disparities, particularly stroke disparities, with emphasis on stroke risk factors and delivery of acute care as related to race/ethnic, gender and geographic disparities. The online training will consist of 8 videos each less than 30 minutes.

This session, Disparities in Stroke Risk Factors and Ideal Cardiovascular Health (16:17 min), will describe the American Heart Association definition of ideal cardiovascular health and present disparities in stroke risk factors and ideal cardiovascular health data from the long-standing, multi-racial/ethnic Northern Manhattan study.

Objectives:
At the completion of this online course, the learner will be able to:
• Review data on race-ethnic differences in stroke incidence and subtype and vascular risk factors.
• Describe the geographic disparities in stroke mortality and hospitalizations in Florida and Puerto Rico.
• Identify potential solutions for addressing disparity.
• Describe the role of EMS and their relationship with acute stroke care.
• Discuss the FL-PR CReSD culturally tailored approaches to intervention and educational training.
• Discuss evidence-based best practice strategies that may impact in-hospital acute stroke disparities.
