Program Overview:
Discussion between the rheumatologist and neuro-ophthalmologist faculty reflects similarities and differences in the multidisciplinary diagnosis and ongoing management of GCA. The roles of temporal artery biopsy, ultrasound, and imaging for large vessel vasculitis (LVV) are illustrated and discussed. Initial therapy with intravenous or oral high-dose corticosteroids is reviewed with consideration for vision-threatening cranial GCA. Evidence-based practical use of steroid-sparing agents, specifically tocilizumab, is discussed in the context of current American College of Rheumatology/Vasculitis Foundation treatment guidelines for GCA. Whiteboard elements highlight key discussion points, and a whiteboard animation provides a summary of the activity.
