Real-World, Value-Added Benefits of Real-Time CGM in an Integrated Health System is organized by Impact Education, LLC.
Release Date: February 25, 2021
Expiration Date: August 31, 2022
Statement of Need/Program Overview:
This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of managed care pharmacy directors, clinical pharmacists, quality directors, medical directors, registered nurses, and other managed health care professionals. The vast majority of members with diabetes have an A1C above ADA targets, putting them at risk for other costly comorbidities. Studies have shown that a lower A1C reduces microvascular and macrovascular complications associated with T1D. To effectively address these clinical challenges and elicit improvements across 29 indices of glycemic control and glycemic variability, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) has been endorsed by various professional endocrinology-centered organizations. To further optimize the clinical management of T1D and T2D, managed care and payer professionals should remain cognizant of the detrimental effects of administrative burden and restrictive benefit design on provider prescribing and member access to appropriate clinical interventions. Seamless, real-time access to CGM technology under the pharmacy benefit is essential to facilitate prescribing and use of this proven intervention among patients and providers, respectively. This educational activity is designed to improve knowledge and competence among managed care professionals of the management of diabetes through CGM.
Educational Objectives:
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
• Characterize the value of Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) coverage and access through the pharmacy
• Describe a comprehensive approach for diabetes management integrating CGM for health systems and other payer types
• Outline key steps in the implementation of CGM coverage and access through the pharmacy
• Define specific achievable cost savings related to CGM access and coverage through the pharmacy in terms of clinical outcomes, avoidance of resource utilization, and operational efficiencies
