Course Description:
Health care providers in any setting encounter a variety of pulmonary conditions in the adult population.  The understanding of these conditions is essential to providing patients with thorough care.  With these conditions, there is a wide variety of pulmonary diagnostic tests and procedures that are performed.  It is necessary for health care providers to understand these tests so that the results can be integrated into patient care.

This course will discuss the pathophysiology and presentation of restrictive lung disease as well as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.  In addition it will review pulmonary diagnostic testing procedures.  The course will review the components and stages of pulmonary rehabilitation.  This course will leave health care providers with a greater understanding of pulmonary conditions, their presentation, how they are diagnosed and the management of these conditions.

Course Goals:
This course is intended to instruct the professional on pulmonary conditions, how they are diagnosed and the management of these conditions

Professional Objectives:
• Identify 3 pathological changes that occur with restrictive lung disease and describe 3 signs and 2 symptoms that are associated with these pathological changes.
• Identify 5 causes of restrictive lung disease.
• List 3 of the impairments associated with COPD
• Recognize the difference between the obstructive diseases of chronic bronchitis, emphysema, asthma, cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis.
• List the different benefits to each of the following tests: chest imaging, CT, MRI, bronchoscopy and PFTs.
• List how pH and PaC02 are analyzed when assessing ABGs
• Identify the components of a pulmonary rehabilitation program, the appropriate candidates, and specific considerations for various stages of pulmonary disease.
