Course Description:
Neuropsychiatric disorders have surpassed cardiovascular conditions worldwide in causing disability and premature death. As healthcare professionals, nurses often encounter people with mental illness. This module discusses the etiology of severe mental illness as well as current treatment guidelines and general nursing recommendations for various psychiatric disorders. It specifically describes care for depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder.

Goal and Learning Outcomes :
The goal of this course is to provide nurses in acute care settings with information about severe mental illness and its treatment.

After taking this course, you should be able to:
• Discuss the public health and social impact of severe and persistent mental illnesses
• Describe positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia and treatment guidelines
• Identify symptoms, treatment, and comorbidity concerns with major depressive disorders
• Explain diagnostic categories and biochemical considerations with bipolar illness
• Describe anxiety disorders and treatments
• Discuss how nurses can have an impact on policy and education issues to improve mental healthcare
