Course Overview:
First, do no harm. A fundamental principle of medical care, yet thousands of patients suffer harm from medical errors every day. In fact, a recent study by John Hopkins University School of Medicine estimated that medical errors claim as many as 250,000 lives each year in the United States, making them the third leading cause of death ahead of respiratory disease, accidents, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, preventable medical errors are estimated to cost from $17 to $29 billion per year (Makary & Daniel, 2016).

Given the significant impact medical errors can have on health and safety, all licensed professionals caring for patients must understand how these errors occur and how to prevent them. This course will discuss factors that increase the risk for medical errors and how the root cause analysis process and other evidence-based strategies can aid in preventing them. In addition, five of the most misdiagnosed medical conditions will be reviewed, along with strategies for prevention.
