Overview:
Prescribing Controlled Substances course has been accepted through the Florida Board of Medicine, Florida Board of Osteopathic Medicine, Florida Board of Dentistry and Florida Board of Podiatry as continuing medical education which meets the controlled substance legislation (House House Bill 21) requirements for the biennial renewal of licenses. It isn't accredited for Nurse Assistants or Physician Practitioners.

Learning Objectives:
• Recognize the extent of the opioid addiction problem in Florida.
• Explain the new Florida regulations and laws regarding the prescription of controlled substances and adhere to the requirements for practitioners under the new regulations.
• Follow the latest established, evidence-based guidelines for prescribing opioids and other controlled substances, such as prescribing urgent opioid antagonists.
• Identify patients who might benefit from non-opioid alternatives and non-pharmacological treatment and ensure the highest quality of care for patients and treatment for pain.
• Follow the best practices in an outside patient setting when prescribing controlled drugs and think about alternative therapies.
• Explain the mechanism of the action that leads to addiction in some patients but not others.
• Identify patients who are at risk of developing addiction after the use of opioids for acute pain. Then, implement prevention strategies
