Description:
Shock, the imbalanced state where oxygen demand of the tissues is greater than what they’re receiving, appears in almost every patient admitted to an ICU. Whether it’s postoperative blood loss, chronic heart failure or septic shock, early recognition and intervention are essential. Intended for RNs and NPs who either primarily care for children or who only see them intermittently, this session explores the physical signs and diagnostic tests for rapidly identifying an acutely decompensating pediatric patient experiencing shock with an in-depth review of the accompanying pathophysiological concepts. Management strategies for all types of shock are discussed, and differences between adults and children are highlighted. By the end of the session, participants are able to confidently recognize an acutely decompensating child, react to changes in the patient condition and even recommend additional management strategies.

Objective:
• Identify clinical signs and hemodynamic monitoring changes indicative of an acutely decompensating pediatric patient experiencing shock.
• Describe medical and nursing interventions used to manage pediatric patients in various stages and states of shock.
• Compare and contrast pediatric and adult research and recommendations for the treatment of shock.
