Description :
After decades of advances in preventive technology, the caries rate is once again on the rise in preschool children, especially among those from lower and middle socioeconomic backgrounds. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than 4 million preschoolers are affected by dental caries, a jump of 600,000 in 10 years. Will this trend continue, and will these same children incur even more caries as they grow older? Today an estimated 80% of all American adolescents have tooth decay by the age of 17. An estimated 51 million school hours are lost each year due to poor oral health. And dental-related emergencies often constitute the first “dental visit” for 25% of pediatric patients seen in a children’s hospital. Unfortunately, the rising demand that the caries epidemic is causing for pediatric care is being outpaced by a small number of practitioners specially qualified to treat this population. Out of approximately 183,000 active licensed dentists in the country, less than 3%-only about 5,000-are pediatric dentists. To meet this demand, it will be incumbent on all general practitioners to have a solid understanding and comfort level with the unique challenges that treating pediatric patients can present.

• Identify and describe the various administration routes employed in pediatric sedation.
• Discuss the modes of action of the various medications used for oral conscious sedation in a dental setting.
