Patients Who “Take Too Much” and Those Who Care for Them, is organized by American Medical Directors Association and would be held on May 03, 2017.
In every post-acute and long-term care setting, some individuals consume more than their “fair share” of the facility resources, taxing the capabilities of the organization. Perhaps this is due to their personality or behavioral characteristics, the impact they have on the organization (consuming resources, escalating risk, reducing morale), or the frustrations of staff trying to stratify their needs or demands, but generally this is related to the emotional reactions they incite in caregivers. Too often, strategies to approach these patients rely on appeasing, explaining, or educating which can aggravate the problem. This webinar will use a case-based approach to help participants analyze challenging cases, then develop and justify effective behavioral care plans which focus on what staff do rather than the actions of the resident.
Learning Objectives :
• Analyze a case of a resident who is consuming excessive facility resources, identifying the underlying
needs and wants, the actions staff have been taking and their impacts, and the specific challenges to be addressed.
• Define and describe the process of development of a behavioral care plan that is justified through assuring that care for one resident does not violate the rights of other residents for care.
• Describe three strategies that are effective in working with demanding individuals.
• Identify three barriers to success and how they may be overcome.
