Statement of Need:
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting up to one in every five children worldwide. Primary Care Providers (PCPs) must be aware of the social aspects of the disease, as well risks for psychosocial developments. Differential diagnosis skill development is essential. PCPs need current, evidence?based information on all approved therapies and should be able to distinguish benefits and risks for patients to present balanced options and practice patient?centric care. Clinical guidelines on AD should be adapted for non?specialist practice and presented in a way that is beneficial for PCPs. PCPs must be able to effectively and empathically communicate about AD and provide complete information in a supportive way to improve management. As many as eight of ten patients have topical corticosteroid TCS phobia, and about half of the patients with it exhibit treatment nonadherence due to stoppage or misuse. Providers should be able to identify and discuss TCS phobia with parents and provide accurate and current information about TCSs and alternatives that may improve adherence. This presentation will provide information which should assist providers with the diagnosis, management and ability to address barriers to the treatment of AD.

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity learners should be able to:
• Apply primary care-focused and patient-centric guidelines to the diagnosis, management and treatment of atopic dermatitis.
• Identify and address patient and provider barriers to adherence and effective management and treatment of atopic dermatitis, including effective communication, topical corticosteroid phobia and proper use of emollient agents.
• Review data on newer agents approved for atopic dermatitis and potential impact of disease treatment and patient adherence, and
• Improve the quality of patient care related to AD.
