Description:
Effective communication is essential to quality critical care, yet can be challenging given the seriousness of patient conditions. Common communication issues and barriers within critical care are reviewed. Through role play and video prompt, faculty demonstrate communication strategies for facilitating challenging conversations with patients, families and teams. These include discussing prognosis, goals of care, and family meetings. The session concludes with an interactive question-and-answer session.

Objectives:
• List key barriers to communication in critical care settings.
• Use three palliative-care communication strategies to assist in difficult conversations with patients, families and colleagues.
• Identify and access evidenced-based tools, resources and education to enhance communication skills in critical care setting.
