Description:
This course is part of the Orthopedic Core Curriculum for rehabilitation professionals. The focus of this module is the foot and ankle. You will learn: critical thinking during subjective examination of the patient; planning an effective objective examination; identification, assessment and risk factors for various body regions; reg flags and when medical referral to a physician is needed; differential diagnosis creation; development of a plan of care using a case-based approach; creation of collaborative goals that are achievable and meaningful to the patient.

Learning Objectives:
HSS Professional Education activities are intended to improve the quality of patient care and safety. At the conclusion of this course the participant will be able to:

  • Identify the pertinent functional anatomy and biomechanics of the foot and ankle complex.
  • Discuss red flag findings and symptoms that warrant physician referral related to the foot and ankle.
  • Generate differential diagnosis based on comprehensive subjective information and pattern recognition of the foot and ankle.
  • Implement examination test and measures based upon a comprehensive subjective examination to rule in and rule out differential diagnosis using a case-based learning approach.
  • Implement specific and appropriate treatment techniques and exercises most relevant to different foot and ankle pathologies.

Physical Therapists:
Hospital for Special Surgery is a New York State Education Department approved provider for physical therapy continuing education. This course is approved for a maximum of 1.0 contact hour.

This activity is provided by the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners Accredited Provider 2512063TX and meets continuing competence requirements for physical therapist and physical therapist assistant licensure renewal in Texas.
