Learning Objectives:
1. Describe how the role for the use of opioids in acute, chronic and cancer pain has changed in the past 20 years.
2. Differentiate addiction, physical dependency and pseudo-addiction.
3. State the similarities and differences in the principles for the use of opioids for patients who have chronic non-cancer pain and those who have end-of-life pain.
4. Identify the main characteristics of patients who would be identified as "high risk", "moderate risk" and "low risk" for chronic opioid use.
5. State the definitions of "tolerance" and "hyperalgesia" and how to prevent/minimize each of these from negatively influencing the care of patients who are receiving opioids.
6. State three reasons why opioids may not be effective for some patients with chronic pain.
7. State key educational statements that should be given to all patients and caregivers about the safe use, proper storage and disposal of opioids.
8. Describe various tamper resistant opioid products on the market and how these products may reduce misuse, abuse and diversion.
9. Compare and contrast the pharmacological benefits and risks of the following non-opioid pharmacological options for managing pain: a) cannabinoids; b) NSAIDS; c) anticonvulsants; d) antidepressants.
10. State common side effects associated with pain medications and be able to recommend strategies to prevent the side effects from impacting the patient’s quality of life.
