Office Anesthesia for the Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Patient is organized by American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS).

Description:
Millions of patients take medications for psychiatric conditions. There is paucity of guidelines for the management of these medications to provide outpatient anesthesia. The pharmacology of psychiatric drugs, adverse effects and drugs interactions with sedatives and general anesthetics will be discussed. There is a significant increase in substance abuse across the United States. The lecture also will focus on the drug abuse patient and the implications on office anesthesia.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss various psychiatric drugs and their pharmacology. 
  • Describe the psychiatric drug interactions related to provision of office anesthesia. 
  • Identify the substance abuse patient and appropriately provide anesthesia.
