Conference Description :
Long before an infant is conceived, the nutritional status of both parents will play a major role in the child’s long-term health. Most people know that pregnant women must be properly nourished for the fetus to develop properly. Fewer people know that inadequate nutritional status of the parents when they are forming the egg and sperm may predestine the fetus to develop chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and excess weight/obesity as an adult. Nutritional epigenetics examines how nutrition turns our genes on and off — how epigenetic expressions predetermine not only the future health status of the developing fetus, but also that fetus’s future offspring - and beyond.

Conference Objectives are :
The goal of this continuing education program is to increase the registered dietitian’s, fitness professional’s, health educator’s, and laboratory professional’s knowledge of the effects of periconceptional malnutrition. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
• Define epigenetics and explain how gene expression is regulated.
• Identify specific nutrients involved in regulating gene expression.
• Explain the correlation between inadequate nutritional status during development and the development of chronic disease later in life.
