Course Description:
Cardiovascular diseases represent the main cause of mortality in Italy, as in the remaining European countries, and one of the main causes of invality and social costs. Hypercholesterolemia represents one of the main reversible (treatable) risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. If it has already been widely confirmed that the reduction of cholesterolemia is associated with a directly proportional reduction in the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, today it is increasingly clear that the earlier the optimization of cholesterolemia and the greater the preventive effect. In this context, it would be desirable for the whole general population to maintain LDL cholesterol values ??below 115 mg / dL, but, especially in order to optimize it also in young subjects with only sub-optimal cholesterol values, it is unthinkable to be able to treat the entire population concerned with drugs. In this context, the most recent international literature, the guidelines of the European societies of atherosclerosis and cardiology (EAS / ESC), as well as some consensus documents of international experts suggest to treat with some food supplements all subjects resistant to the dietary-food approach only. but not yet candidates for drug therapy. It is therefore necessary that health professionals are aware of which food supplements are most suitable and studied for the optimization of cholesterolemia in globally healthy subjects with suboptimal values ??of plasma cholesterol. it is unthinkable to be able to treat the entire population concerned with drugs.
