Description:
Non-ventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia (NVHAP) is an often-overlooked pneumonia which impacts patient morbidity and mortality as well as length of stay and cost. This session begins with a case study and provides an overview of the incidence and pathophysiology of this problem. Risk factors and the 2016 Infectious Diseases Society of America Guidelines for medical management are also discussed. Recent literature regarding evidence-based nursing interventions to minimize or prevent this pneumonia are described.

Objectives:
• Describe the incidence and pathophysiology of NVHAP.
• Identify risk factors which may place a patient at risk of NVHAP.
• Discuss current evidence-based recommendations to minimize or prevent NVHAP.
