Neurotrophic keratitis is a degenerative corneal disease characterized by decreased or absent corneal sensation, which can lead to an epithelial breakdown, impairment of healing, and ultimately to the development of corneal ulceration, melting, and perforation. Treating neurotrophic keratitis should be prompt and based on the stage and severity of the disease. However, this disease remains difficult and challenging to treat, and eye care providers need to be informed of the most recent advances in treatment.

Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this educational activity, the participating ophthalmologist will be better able to:
• Describe the stages of neurotrophic keratitis and how to differentiate it from similar diseases.
• Recognize the various potential causes of neurotrophic keratitis.
• Understand the mechanisms of action of newer treatments and when they should be introduced into treatment regimens for neurotrophic keratitis.
• Identify the relationships between disease characteristics, drugs, treatment frequency, visual, and anatomic outcomes.
