Course Description:
This course discusses myofascial trigger points (muscle trigger points) and their relationship to muscle fiber dysfunction. A comprehensive systematic research review is included in this course discussing the prevalence, etiology, observable phenomenon, and pathobiology associated with trigger point development. This course also intends to clarify topics that have been obscured by myth and misinformation, including the definition of trigger points and referral pain patterns, the relationship between trigger points and continuous low-load stress (including posture), and the observable phenomenon that demonstrate the existence and accessibility of trigger points. Further, this course begins to detail the relationship between trigger points and myofascial pain syndrome, chronic whiplash syndrome, and fibromyalgia.
Behavioral Objectives
• Students will be prepared to pass a final exam by choosing from a list of potential answers to behavior-objective matched multiple-choice questions.
• Compare the terms myalgia, trigger point, observable phenomenon, taut band and muscle fiber dysfunction.
• Summarize the prevalence of trigger point development.
• Describe the relationship between constant low-load activity and trigger point development.
• List at least 2 categories of excessive stress that may result in muscle fiber dysfunction and trigger point development.
• Describe at least 2 objectively observable phenomenon arising from active trigger points.
• Recall at least 2 options for addressing trigger points that have been referred to in this course.
• Distinguish between muscle fiber changes and CNS changes (centralization) that may occur in conditions correlated with trigger point development.
• Deduce/synthesize a hypothesis regarding the effect this technique will have on outcome measures and the appropriate test for re-assessment.
• Design an intervention plan including these techniques with the intent of affecting an objectively measured functional outcome.
• Describe the functional benefits (including impact on performance, occupation or daily tasks) that may be expected from implementing the intervention plan.
