Overview:
There are about 2.2 million people affected by multiple sclerosis in the world: 750,000 in Europe and over 122,000 in Italy, where the disease affects one person in 500. In Sardinia the prevalence is higher, with 1 case in 250 people. Every year in our country more than 3,400 people receive a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis: 50% are women; the age at onset is generally between 20 and 40 years, but 3-5% of new cases involve children and adolescents under 16 years.
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease that affects the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves). Symptoms can be mild or severe, visible (motor disturbances) or invisible (fatigue, visual disturbances). The course, severity and specific symptoms of the disease vary from person to person.
Relapsing-remitting MS is the most common form of the disease and is characterized by acute attacks (or relapses) that alternate with periods of remission with no symptoms or with mild residual symptoms. About 85% of people with multiple sclerosis have a relapsing-remitting disease onset; in about 65% of cases this form evolves towards the secondary progressive form.
The aim of this course is to provide scientific updates on the diagnostic and therapeutic management of relapsing-remitting MS.
