Course Description:
This learning module will describe the burden of drowning deaths and disparities in drowning outcomes, and highlight risk factors for drowning. It will describe the need for and benefits of adopting a standardized DSI in water-related fatalities for investigators, prevention professionals, and communities. It will then introduce resources to support standardized investigations, including the Water-Related Death Scene Investigation Protocol, developed by MPHI's National Center for Fatality Review and Prevention and its partners. Finally, it will highlight effective drowning prevention resources to support public health and public safety professionals working to prevent drowning.
Course Objectives:
• Describe the burden of drowning deaths and disparities in drowning outcomes.
• Identify risk factors in drowning deaths.
• Describe the benefits of adopting a standardized death scene investigation (DSI) in water-related fatalities.
• Discuss the benefits of trauma-informed interviews in drowning deaths.
