Activity Summary:
To the public, the nursing profession exemplifies caring and compassion. Yet bullying may exist in all areas where nursing is practiced. Unhealthy work environments and lack of mentoring perpetuate the behaviors associated with eating our young and preying on the mature, as well as bullying involving other disciplines. A profession that has endured a shortage for the past eight decades cannot afford to treat its members in a manner likely to drive many of them away from organizations or from nursing altogether. Nor can we expect to promote our profession to the student population when many students experience bullying behaviors before they even enter the workforce. The Healthy Work Environment Standards of Skilled Communication, True Collaboration and Authentic Leadership are emphasized to create major culture changes and zero tolerance policies to promote positive interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary relationships.

• Describe five bullying behaviors found in the nursing workplace.
• Identify two effects of bullying for nurses, students, patients, and employers.
• Explain two methods of addressing bullying behaviors to create a healthy workplace.
