OVERVIEW

Medical Problems in the Wilderness Course is organized by AdventureMed.

Expiration Date: December 31, 2030

Course Description:
While much of wilderness medicine focuses on injuries as opposed to illness, awareness of several prevalent medical problems is essential for a wilderness first responder. While medical conditions are too numerous to teach them all, and many of the diagnostics and treatments are unavailable, a framework for assessment, treatment, and evacuation is essential in providing quality patient care.  In this module, you will be able recognize life-threatening medical problems, treat medical conditions in a backcountry setting, and learn the guidelines of medical evacuations.

Objectives:
The purpose of this module is to help you develop a process that will allow you to overcome obstacles and provide the patient(s) with the appropriate care.

Upon completion, students should be familiar with:

  • Cardiac illnesses such as angina and myocardial infarction
  • Signs, symptoms, treatment, and evacuation of anaphylaxis
  • Neurological conditions such as seizure and stroke
  • Hypo and hyperglycemia
