This self-instructional monograph is designed to provide essential information on medical error prevention for physicians across all specialties. It is also appropriate for medical students, residents, and other allied healthcare professionals who are involved in patient care.

This course fulfills the prevention of medical errors education requirement for Florida licensed physicians.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be able to:
• Explain the scope of the problem of medical errors
• Define medical error, differentiating preventable from non-preventable
• Define root cause analysis and know its use in preventing medical errors
• List adverse event-associated injuries that must be reported to Florida AHCA within 15 calendar days of the occurrence
• Identify the root causes for the six most common types of sentinel events
• Identify the five most commonly misdiagnosed medical conditions in the state of Florida
