Course Description:
An estimated 100,000 Americans are affected by sickle cell disease (SCD), which can lead to severe and difficult consequences. Pain is the most common clinical manifestation, and can be debilitating. Vaso-occlusive crisis is an acute pain episode that is not only unexpected, but can also lead to lengthy hospital stays and completely disrupt a patient’s life. There were limited medications available for these patients previously; however, there is now more attention being placed on investigating new treatment options. It is important for pharmacists to be aware of the role in therapy of currently approved therapies as well as the emerging agents that may alter the treatment armamentarium for SCD. This interactive panel discussion will include the perspectives of both physicians and pharmacists and feature a patient who provides insight on living with SCD, as well as the successes and challenges she has had with the management of her disease.

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:
• Explain the pathophysiology and complications with sickle cell disease (SCD)
• Explore the current and emerging treatment options for SCD management, particularly therapies for vaso-occlusive crisis
• Identify treatment and patient management approaches to improve outcomes of patients living with SCD
