Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common infectious conditions treated in primary care settings. The presentation and management of UTI differs considerably in different patient populations, such as premenopausal women versus older men. This session will present updated definitions of complicated and uncomplicated UTI, and it will offer guidance for choosing among UTI treatment options in this era of rising bacterial resistance. Tips to distinguish between symptomatic UTI and bladder colonization (asymptomatic bacteriuria) will be provided. When to consider prostatitis and epididymitis in men with UTI will be discussed.

- Recognize that urinary tract infection (UTI) is a different illness in different patient populations
- Tailor treatment options to individual patients with cystitis, recurrent UTI, and pyelonephritis
- Differentiate between symptomatic UTI and asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB)
- Consider prostatitis and epididymitis in the differential of febrile UTI in men
