Description:
Complex pediatric feeding problems involve biological and behavioral aspects that need to be addressed for a child to achieve quality feedings. A “look and listen” approach suggests that expert clinicians capitalize on clinical abilities of looking and listening to the behavioral and biological aspects of feeding between the child and feeder. Family caregivers and nurses become the primary feeders of children, and benefit from evidence-based information that leads to optimal patient outcomes. Nurses are responsible for monitoring patient nutrition and hydration. If nurses know, observe and report symptoms of dysphagia and other feeding complications, children will receive appropriate assessment and treatment to prevent adverse effects and promote quality feeding with optimal nutrition. This proposal suggests that a standard technique should be used with the pediatric population within a variety of clinical settings.

Conference Objectives are:
The goal of this pediatric dysphagia continuing education module for speech-language pathologists, nurses and occupational therapists is to provide experienced and new clinicians with an enhanced ability to assess and treat feeding difficulties with pediatric populations and to assist the nurses who care for these children to implement feeding plans effectively. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
• Define and discuss the components of a "look and listen" approach for pediatric dysphagia assessment and treatment
• Identify barriers to oral feedings in pediatric populations diagnosed with dysphagia and/or feeding difficulties, and suggest supportive feeding modalities for the nurses who provide direct care to pediatric patients
• Describe outcomes of a "look and listen" approach that will enhance the quality of feedings between the child and caregiver

Additional details will be posted as soon as they are available.
