The Organ Donation and Transplantation Alliance is offering 1.0 Category I CEPTC credit from the American Board for Transplant Certification. Purpose/Goal:
The Final Rule has dramatically changed the organ allocation system by prioritizing patients based upon their need for transplant rather than their proximity to the donor. This course will review the history of organ allocation in the U.S. and how the successes and growth led to the need for change. The arduous path of local/regional/national distribution to new allocation systems like the Acuity Circles for liver will be discussed as well as the goal of creating Continuous Distribution Allocation systems for all organs.

Objectives:
At the end of the webinar, participants should be able to:
• Summarize the history behind systems of organ allocation.
• Outline the issues associated with the previous allocation system that ultimately led to the need to prioritize patients beyond wait time.
• Recognize the reasons why disparities arose using arbitrary boundaries for distribution.
• Assess the benefits of establishing continuous distribution as an optimal methodology.
