Heavy drinking often goes unrecognized, and in a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only 15.7% of adults reported discussing alcohol use with a healthcare provider — this despite increasing recommendations for healthcare providers to screen for alcohol use in all settings. This makes it even more important for community health and home health nurses to recognize the symptoms of late-onset alcoholism. Early assessment and intervention have been linked to successful recovery in late-onset alcoholics. Information about alcoholism in seniors is important for every provider who has contact with older adults.

Objectives:
The goal of this late-onset alcoholism continuing education module is to update healthcare providers’ ability to identify and care for elderly patients in the community who have late-onset alcoholism. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
