Late-Life Mood Disorders: Current Diagnostic and Treatment Approaches is organized by College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP) and will be held from Jun 01, 2017 - Apr 25, 2020.

Target Audience:
This course is designed for pharmacists, nurse practitioners or other healthcare professionals involved in the comprehensive medication management of psychiatric and/or neurological patients.

Session Summary:
Mood disorders are the second most common psychiatric disorders in long term care (LTC) after neuro-cognitive disorders. Due to a variety of myths perpetuated about depression in LTC and because these patients tend to present atypically, depression is often unrecognized and untreated in this population. Untreated depression is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in LTC. This presentation will focus on current concepts relative to diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of depression in LTC. Treatment approaches will be discussed, focusing on pharmacotherapy.

Learning Objectives:
• Discuss the prevalence and risk factors of depression in long term care (LTC), elucidating myths about depression among the aging and in LTC.
• Describe the diagnosis of depression in older patients, utilizing clinical diagnostic tools and neuroimaging.
• Discuss the current treatment approaches for late-life depression, focusing on pharmacotherapy.
• Understand the impact of late-life depression on co-morbid medical problems, medication adherence, pain treatment, rehabilitation and risk of suicide.
