Description:
The last decade has seen a decrease in Ludwig’s angina and deep neck infections. However, due to lack of access to care during the COVID-19 pandemic, a spike in odontogenic infection cases has occurred. Ludwig’s angina and deep neck infections are life-threatening infections that require prompt diagnosis and management. Often, the management is complicated by failure to treat early, improper initial surgical management and infection with resistant organisms resulting in increases morbidity and mortality and use of resources. In this presentation, the disease's medical and surgical treatments and the current recent trends in microbiology, medical and surgical management will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Discuss and understand the pathophysiology of Ludwig’s angina and deep neck infections.
- Examine the differences in the current presentation of Ludwig’s and deep neck infections compared to the presentations 20 years ago.
- Explain the current trends in deep neck infection microbiology.
- Discuss the recommended timing and best medical and surgical management of Ludwig’s and deep neck infections.
