Course Description:
In 2017 the ADA passed a resolution encouraging dentists to screen for sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBD) as part of a comprehensive medical and dental history and provide referrals and evidence-based care when appropriate. This course will provide participants with an introduction to sleep-disordered breathing and sleep health with a primary focus on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in pediatric patients. Participants will learn the definition of sleep, understand sleep terminology, learn the anatomy of the airway and physiology of sleep, the various types of sleep disorders, and the pathophysiology of OSA. We will review the impact sleep-disordered breathing has on our patients and the role of the dental professional in screening for signs and symptoms of OSA. Treatment options and pathways for a referral will be introduced.

Objectives:
• Participants will understand the anatomic and physiologic basis for various disorders of sleep.
• Participants will recognize the signs and symptoms of sleep disorders including obstructive sleep apnea including a screening tool to use right away in their practice.
•  Participants will know the various treatment options that exist for patients and recognize pathways for referral within their communities the impact sleep-disordered breathing has on our patients and the role of the dental professional in the screening for signs and symptoms of OSA. Treatment options and pathways for the referral will be introduced.
