Treatment for acute ischemic stroke focuses on improving perfusion to the affected area of the brain by restoring blood flow through thrombolytic therapy, mechanical revascularization (the use of devices that extract the clot), or balloon angiography and stenting. The goal is minimizing disability and improving functional outcomes. The impact of treatment on mortality has yet to be proved. If blood flow to the penumbra (the area surrounding an infarct) can be restored, the neurological deficits can be minimized or reversed. Nurses and other healthcare professionals should be familiar with treatment options, understand the need for quick interventions, and recognize how their role can improve patient outcomes. This module provides healthcare providers with information about interventional radiology procedures to treat acute ischemic stroke.
