Description:
Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a severe, complex condition involving acute and chronic complications that significantly affect morbidity and mortality, demanding ongoing, multidisciplinary care. Patients frequently encounter disparities in access to pain management and palliative services. This activity integrates a case-based, expert-led approach to illustrate the profound benefits of incorporating early and continuous palliative care across the lifespan, addressing the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of this underserved population. Upon completion of this activity, learners will demonstrate the ability to apply evidence-based strategies to manage pain and non-pain symptoms, lead equitable care planning discussions, and evaluate care delivery models that integrate palliative principles into SCD management. These skills support improved patient quality of life, enhanced interdisciplinary collaboration, and the reduction of healthcare disparities.

Learning Outcomes
Following participation in this activity, learners will be able to:

Recognize SCD as a serious illness and articulate its impact on patients’ quality of life.
Apply evidence-based best practices for managing pain, non-pain symptoms, and advance care planning in patients with SCD.
Integrate trauma-informed care principles and anti-racist frameworks into the management of SCD patients.
Evaluate models of care delivery that support palliative integration for individuals with SCD.
