Activity Overview:
The advent of antiretroviral therapy (ART), has granted the possibility of controlling the HIV epidemic. Adherence to ART helps maintain a low/undetectable viral load under control and prolong the time of progression to AIDS, resulting in near normal life expectancy. The availability of highly active antiretroviral therapy has provided tremendous breakthroughs such as suppression of virus replication and restoration of immunity in infected persons. HIV management requires life-long treatment, therefore some of the major obstacles physicians face with ART is the incidence of adverse effects of the treatment, pill burden and stigma, which persuade patients to discontinue the treatment. This activity is designed to update clinicians on the evolving landscape of treatment options in the management of HIV while incorporating the patient perspective into clinical decision making.
