Description:
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is one of the most common genetic hematologic diseases in the world affecting an estimated 100,000 Americans and millions of people across the globe. This educational event will address the acute care of patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) by identifying some emergent presentations as well as highlighting some of the barriers to care patients with SCD may face. These barriers primarily include skepticism and bias which can lead to missed or undertreated devastating sequelae. Patients can also sometimes face challenges accessing, establishing, and maintaining care with physicians. An understanding of the impact of these challenges and the potential harmful outcomes may lead to a decrease in their incidence.
Learning Objectives:
After completing this course, the learner should be better able to:
- Review sickle disease as a lifelong disease entity
- Describe acute conditions associated with sickle cell disease
- Discuss the barriers to care that patients with SCD may face and the intersection of the biases involving chronic pain, chronic illness, and racism
