Identifying and Caring for Patients With Chronic HCV : A Critical Need in Rural America is organized by Med-IQ and would be held during May 11 - Sep 27, 2017.
The target audience for this medical event for Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Primary Care. This CME Conference has been approved with a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
Traditionally, the responsibility of treating patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) has fallen exclusively on specialists in gastroenterology or infectious disease. New clinical practice recommendations for testing; the availability of novel, highly effective, and more tolerable direct-acting antiviral therapies; and a simultaneous increase in HCV infections, largely related to higher rates of injection drug use, are expected to substantially increase the demand for HCV treatment in the near future. Advances in the management of HCV make providing treatment in the primary care clinic feasible; however, education, training, and support for healthcare professionals are critical for the primary care workforce serving rural communities to capitalize on these advances. For patients who live in rural areas, where specialist care is usually scarce, access to care has been poor. This activity, and the HCV Certificate of Competency Program curriculum it is part of, has been designed to close the gaps in rural HCV patient care. The learning components of the series will arm primary care professionals with knowledge and competence specific to rural practice settings and will improve the capacity for high-quality HCV care across the country.
Conference Objectives are :
This activity provides an in-depth look at current HCV testing guidelines and common challenges rural clinicians face. Moving beyond identifying cases of HCV, this activity will detail steps for evaluating the liver health of newly identified patients and practicalities of comprehensive care for patients with HCV.
• Implement guideline-recommended HCV screening based on risk and birth cohort
• Outline critical components of comprehensive care for patients with chronic HCV
• Describe strategies for assessing the severity of liver disease in patients with HCV
