This illuminative course has been created especially for nurses and other health care professionals who work with patients who may be suffering from the consequences of high altitude sickness.
Course Objectives:
In order to complete this illuminative activity, you will be better able to:
• Define the term “high altitude sickness.”.
• Explain how the body adjusts to new conditions.
• Explain three most common types of acute mountain sickness (AMS).
• List two further types of altitude sickness.
• Give an overview of mild, moderate, and severe AMS.
• Learn more about high altitude cerebral oedema (HACE) symptoms and treatment.
• Discuss symptoms of high altitude pulmonary oedema (HAPE) and treatment.
• Describe three medications used for treating high altitude sickness.
• Explain how portable hyperbaric chambers are used.
• Review counterindications for travel to high altitudes and effects of high altitude on pre-existing conditions.
• Provide 5 prevention measures for high altitude sickness.
